Painted Veil
Painted Veil is the inaugural solo exhibition of works by artist Boshudhara Mukherjee. In her works the canvas is more than just a surface to paint on; it is the active participant in the process of creation and often dictates it. Boshudhara feels the need to free the canvas, to be able to manipulate and manoeuvre it. She allows it to occupy its own space by discarding its framework and letting it hang freely in space.
The work, like the meanings are multilayered. Various thoughts drift in as the work evolves and develops. The canvas is cut and woven back together, sometimes more than once, to create the work. It is not only the creation but more importantly the recreation and distortion of the pattern that occur while weaving to create new, unexpected patterns that is vital to the work. Yet behind the apparent fragility of the work, is hidden its great strength to endure. Whilst the intricate, delicate nature of the work also hides the destructive process of its creation.
Boshudhara’s work reflects life and the distortions created by its challenges and problems. Despite setbacks, one tries to pick up the pieces and rebuild one’s life. But no matter how hard they try the distorting scars remain. The works are subsequently like portraits or masks that people wear. They are the faces one ‘puts on’ or hides behind in an attempt to not totally reveal their true self. But the distortions continue to reveal the trials and travails of the inner self.
This idea of the hidden and the revealed is further extended in its display. The work can be viewed from all sides though created frontally. The front represents the conscious, the back developing automatically, the unconscious. The process of creation is most important for Boshudhara. On completion, the interpretations are many and this ambiguity allows for multiple interpretations. Her work is not a painting nor a sculpture nor an installation in the conventional sense. In failing to fit into an established category, it questions the viewer’s notions about painting and art, and this is to a large extent what she endeavours to achieve.
Boshudhara completed her M.V.A in Painting from M.S. University, Baroda in 2008 where she received the University Gold Medal award. She received the Nasreen Mohammadi Foundation Scholarship for 2005-06 while studying for her B.V.A. in Painting at M.S. University, Baroda. She is presently an Inlaks Foundation Fine Arts Awardee. She has participated in group shows in Muscat, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai.
